Machine-Made Socks
Alpaca fiber does not retain moisture, which prevents the problem of wet, sweaty feet. This means there’s no need to wash the socks after every wear—they remain comfortable for several days.
Industrial socks containing synthetic fibers can be machine-washed, although hand washing is always an option:
- Machine wash in cold water. We recommend using a mesh laundry bag.
- Lay flat to dry; never use a dryer or place near a direct heat source such as a wood stove.
Knits and Woven Items
Because alpaca fiber doesn’t hold much dust or odor, a quick airing outside is often enough to freshen alpaca knits and woven items. However, it’s best to wash them before storing for long periods to avoid attracting moths with body scents. Hand washing is recommended for handmade knits and weavings:
- Hand wash in cold water (max 30 °C / 86 °F) using a no-rinse wool wash such as Eucalan or a mild shampoo.
Note: If you do rinse, make sure the rinse water is the same temperature as the wash water. - Soak for no more than 5 minutes,
Roll in a towel to remove excess water (do not wring),
Reshape and lay flat to dry. - Roll in a towel to remove excess water (do not wring).
- Reshape and lay flat to dry.
Hand-Dyed Knitting YarnsFils à tricoter teints
When fiber is dyed—especially in dark colors—the water may tint during the first washes. This is called “bleeding.” Although the colors are set during dyeing, you can soak the fiber in a vinegar bath to help reduce bleeding:
- Prepare a vinegar bath with 20% white vinegar (1 part vinegar to 4 parts cold water).
- Soak for 30 minutes.
- Rinse in cold water.
- Roll in a towel to remove excess water (do not wring).
- Reshape and lay flat to dry.
