Thrum mittens are an old tradition that originated in England and became popular in Newfoundland. Small pieces of wool roving, called thrums, are inserted directly into the knitting. Over time, these fibers compress to form a natural felted lining that is windproof and incredibly warm.
Once used by fishermen and outdoor workers in the North Atlantic, they turned simple wool mittens into true shields against the freezing cold. Today, they are cherished as much for their handcrafted authenticity as for the cozy comfort they provide.
